General Yakubu Gowon is the former head of state of Nigeria who ruled from 1966 to 1975. He is renowed for helping to stop the break-away of Eastern Nigeria from the country.
Gowon took power after one military coup d'état and was overthrown in another.
Recently, a new photo of the former Nigerian leader emerged on social media showing him as a young man.
