Barely 18 months after Governor Rochas Okorocha completed the renovation of the Imo State House of Assembly complex, the state lawmakers, including members of staff have again been forced to vacate the complex for fear that the Assembly building may cave in.
The legislative complex which was under renovation for nearly two years before it was opened in June 2015 had again shown disturbing signs of serious structural defects.
This had led to the shutting down of the Assembly Complex and relocation of staff and legislators to the Imo Trade and Investment building otherwise known as the Ahiajoku Centre.
The building was shut down from 2013 to June 2015 for massive renovations and reopened during the swearing in of legislators in the 8th House. Mr. Bennet Ilochonwu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly said the closure was to enable repairs and installation of security gadgets following damages by vandals in December.
The lawmaker representing Aboh Mbaise state Constituency, Mr. Mike Iheanetu (PDP), however said that the structure of the building had been compromised and needed to be reinforced.
“The building’s structure is compromised; there are cracks in the building and it is nearly collapsing. “There is need for reinforcement and the work cannot be done unless we relocate to avoid accidents,” Iheanetu said.
