An Ilorin Magistrate’s Court in Kwara on Monday remanded a man, Ogbechukwu Ogbe, in prison for allegedly slapping a police officer, Sgt. Adisa Akinjide, and a court clerk, Ishola Rotimi, during court proceedings.

The Prosecutor, Abegunde Elijas, said that the accused was disturbing the court during proceedings when he was cautioned not to make noise, but he bluntly refused.

Elijas said that in the process, he was asked to move out of the court, but he refused and started fighting the police and the court clerk.

He alleged that the accused tore the policeman’s uniform and threatened to deal with both of them.

The prosecutor said that the accused was standing trial on a four-count charge of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, interruption of judicial proceeding and intimidation.

He said the offences contravened Sections 267, 155 and 396 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Babatunde Immam ordered that the accused be remanded at Okekura Prison in Ilorin.
He adjourned the case till March 27 for further mention.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ilorin, Kwara State Police Command, has launched a man-hunt for an employee, who organised the robbery, rape and murder of his mistress and master.
The employee, an aide in the house of the deceased, whose identity police are yet to disclose, was said to have disappeared with another gang member after killing Mr. Michael Akhigbe, 65 and his wife, Juliana Akhigbe, 60.
The operation was carried out by the said employee and three others. The police said that the men dumped the bodies of the man and wife inside a well and locked it in order to conceal the crime. Juliana was raped before being killed.
The suspects took the couple’s Toyota Camry car, phones, ATM cards and other valuables. Although the couple’s employee escaped, two among the men that carried out the dreadful act have been arrested.
They have been identified as Adeyemi Aderinkomi and Timothy Ajayi. Aderinkomi and Ajayi, who are presently singing in police custody, said they were promised N200, 000 each to carry out the operation.
The incident happened on December 12, 2016, at Fate area of Ilorin. Aderinkomi and Ajayi, said that the operation lasted nine hours, during which time their partners, now at large, went to a nearby bank gallery with the couple’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and withdrew money.
It was also during that time that Ajayi pounced on 60-year-old Juliana and raped her. Aderinkomi, son of a high chief in a community at Ibadan, Oyo State, was alleged to have inscribed the title of his father on the car, so that it could pass police check points.
Aderinkomi, a security guard, working a stone throw from where the aged couple lives, said he and Ajayi were recruited by the two fleeing partners, on the excuse that they needed to collect some documents from Michael.
The state commissioner of police, Mr. Olusola Amore, said that the masterminds of the crime took the decision to strike because they had information that Michael withdrew a huge sum of money from bank and took it home. Amore added: “The suspects dumped the bodies inside a well to hide their tracks and locked it with a brand new padlock.”
Aderinkomi explained that one of the men that are yet to be arrested is called Soldier.
According to him, it was Soldier that told them that he had some documents he needed to collect from the couple’s apartment. Aderinkomi said: “They promised to give us N200, 000 each. We agreed and told them to alert us whenever they were ready. That night, they called us.
They were the first to enter the house; they met the woman and tied her. Then the man returned at about 7.30 or 8.00pm. He drove into the compound in his car; the two men jumped on him. He was surprised.
He started speaking with them in a language we didn’t understand. He, however, didn’t put up any resistance.
“Later, they ransacked the whole house and took some documents. They collected two ATM cards from the woman; one was for UBA and the other for Union Bank. They went to the bank and collected some money.
They gave us N20, 000 and asked us to take the car away.” The two men also allegedly told Aderinkomi and Ajayi, to take the couple’s television, phones and other belongings and look for buyers.
Aderinkomi further recalled: “We were on the operation until 4.30am. We left the two men there. It was in the morning I heard the couple was killed. I went to Timothy and together we went to meet the two of them. We went to them because we were troubled.
We complained to them about the killing; they assured us that they would handle everything. Honestly, the two of us didn’t know they would kill the couple. Up till now, they have not given us the N200, 000.”
Amore, who described Aderinkomi as a serial criminal, said that the Toyota Camry car, which the suspects took from the couple’s home, was set on fire to cover their tracks.
Aderinkomi, who further confessed to have once led a team of robbers to attack his biological sister, in order to steal her car, said he sustained injuries when he attempted to remove the battery from late Akhigbe’s Toyota Camry car, while it was burning.

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Olusola Amore, on Thursday in Ilorin, told news correspondents that a suspect identified Salisu Imam, has blamed unemployment for his involvement in cult-related activities.

While making his cofession to reporters, the suspect stated that he was lured into cultism by one of  his unnamed friends, who, he said, told him that membership of a cult would guarantee him daily meals, adding that he fell for the bait because he had no job and was always hungry.

He said, “I was jobless and so hungry. One of my friends told me to join the Aiye cult group, that once I am a member, my daily meals are guaranteed. These friends have been taking care of me before they introduced me to cultism and I was left with no option but to play along with them.”

The police boss said following the aftermath of cult killings that took place in Ilorin metropolis and the determination of the command to arrest the culprits, three suspects, Ibrahim Imam, Salisudeen Imam and Saheed Mubaraq were nabbed.


He stated that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of Eiye and Aiye confraternities, adding that they also confessed to have been involved in series of attacks that took place in Ilorin, adding that three live cartridges and charms were recovered from the suspects.

Nigerian civil workers will never stop playing smart with this ghost worker of a thing, how can people be receiving payment of those that are not working
Kwara State Personnel Database Development committee says it has uncovered a total of 8,863 suspected ghost personnel on the payroll of both the state and local governments.
The alternate Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, said this yesterday while submitting the Committee’s report to the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed at the Government House, Ilorin.
He said the 8, 863 personnel could not be verified in the just concluded staff biometric verification exercise, noting that the development could potentially save both the State and local governments N437, 500, 513.56 monthly.
Alhaji Gold said at the time of commencing the verification exercise, the total number of staff on the payroll of both the State and local governments was 81, 446, but only 72, 583 of the workers and pensioners scaled through the verification process.
Giving a further breakdown of the report, the alternate chairman revealed that of the 35, 656 workers on the State government payroll, only 31, 652 were cleared and verified, leaving a total of 4,004 unverified personnel.
He said out of the 45, 790 workers and pensioners on the payroll of the 16 LGs in the State, only 40, 931 were verified, which leaves a total of 4, 859 unverified.
The Committee recommended that the verification exercise should be continuous and that the State government should implement a harmonized staff identification system, certificate verification and clock-in system, which will be deployed by the consultant at no cost to the government.
In his response, Governor Ahmed endorsed all the findings of the committee and also directed the State Ministry of Finance to adopt the Committee’s report to prepare the payroll of both the local and state government workers henceforth.
The governor, however, said that the ministry should warehouse the projected savings until it is ascertained that all workers and pensioners are verified.
Governor Ahmed thanked the consultant and members of the committee for the quality work done and expressed confidence that with the submission of the report, there will be an effective payroll administration at both the local and state levels.

Ayo Fayose, ekii state governor

The Fulani herdsmen from Ilorin, Kwara State capital, but resident in Ekiti State under the aegis of Jamu Nate Fulbe Association of Nigeria have criticised the new grazing law signed by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The law titled, “ Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti, 2016,” provides that grazing activities must be from 7am to 6pm on a daily basis.

According to the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, any herdsman caught with firearms and any weapons whatsoever during grazing shall be charged with terrorism.

The law also provides that any farm products destroyed by the activities of any caught herdsman shall be estimated by an agricultural officer and the expenses of the estimate shall be borne by the culprit.

Under the law, anyone found violating the bill, upon conviction, shall be sentenced to six months in prison without an option of fine.

But the legal adviser to the herdsmen, Mr. Umar Imam, on Wednesday argued that herdsmen who carried light weapons such as cutlasses, knives, catapult and arrows within the time stipulated by the new law should not be charged with terrorism.

He added that this contradicted the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2011.

Imam said, “The law of the federation on terrorism is very clear and no one can be charged for terrorism for carrying lesser arms like cutlasses, catapults and knives during the grazing period as contained in the Ekiti new law.

“I have made it in my submission during the public hearing on the bill in the Ekiti State House of Assembly that these Fulani herdsmen used to use these lesser weapons for certain purposes that can make grazing easier.

“I also told them that movement at night while relocating from one place to another was to ensure that they don’t wreak havoc on the people during the day while relocating to other towns. I expected the state government to have taken care of these in the new law rather than total banning.

“What the state government ought to have done is to allow whoever wants to relocate at night to take permit from a certain government’s authority or inform their Seriki (their leader), but banning them from moving at night may not help the situation, it will make their job difficult,” Imam said.

Also, the Seriki of the association in Ekiti, Alhaji Ahmadu Mahmoud, appealed to the governor to amend the new law, to allow his members to carry lesser arms to ward off attacks during grazing.

Mahmoud, who agreed with the time for grazing, however, criticised the outright banning of night movement, saying it would make their jobs difficult and create more confusion.

“We agree with the governor on the grazing period of between 7am and 6pm, but we should be allowed to carry lesser arms and relocate at night.

“How can somebody who wants to carry his cattle numbering hundreds from Ekiti to places like Lokoja, Ibadan or Ilorin moves during the day? These places are densely populated and it will create traffic congestion and confusion everywhere. The government must look into all these,” he added.

Abubakar Usman

A 24 year-old Fulani herdsman, Abubakar Usman, has been nabbed for allegedly killing his 65-year-old mother, Khadijat, and his brother’s wife, Ramatu Shagari, aged 35.

The suspect was paraded on Wednesday at the state police command’s headquaters in Ilorin along with his other gangs – Yahaya Umar and Abubakar Saletu who were reportedly caught with a human head during the parade.

Usman, who lived in the Patigi area of the state, told Punch Metro that he could not explain what pushed him to the crime he has committed. He, however, alleged that his father might have charmed him, adding that he regretted his action.


He said, “I am into cattle rearing. On that day when I woke up, I took N1,000 from my room and took my cows out for grazing. Suddenly, I discovered that the cattle were running away and I followed them. On getting back home, something came over me and I used a knife to stab my mother. I also stabbed my brother’s wife. I believe that my father charmed me. I do not have mental disorder.”

One of the two suspects arrested with a human head, Umar, also confessed to the crime, saying that there had been a quarrel between him and the victim. He added that he colluded with Saletu to behead the victim in a bush.

He said, “There was a conflict among us. We tricked him into the bush and killed him. While we were trying to run away, the police caught us.”

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, who paraded the suspects, said the crimes were reported to the police by one Abdullahi Adamu of Mamba Fulani Camp, Patigi.

The CP said, “On August 8, at about 1.20pm, information received from Kosubosu Police Division revealed that Umar and Saletu, both of Wobe Fulani Camp, were found in possession of a bag. On interrogation, the bag was found to contain a human head, among other items.

“Further interrogations revealed that the suspects took the head to one Alhaji Kuranga of Muhat Company to buy. The said Alhaji refused and raised the alarm. A search in the bush led to the discovery of a headless body. The victim had been declared missing earlier and the suspects confessed to the crime. The cutlass used in the killing and the human head have already been recovered.”

Amore added that the suspects would be arraigned after investigation.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kwara state on Friday arrested a man identified as Mohammed Adamu for possessing N9.8 million fake currency notes.

The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Apeh Reuben, told the Newsmen in Ilorin, that; “the fake currency were mainly N1,000 notes”

According to Kwara NDLEA Boss , Reuben said Adamu (Suspect) concealed the fake notes in a carton of noodles wrapped with cello tape.

He said that the suspect was arrested by NDLEA Jebba Command while on transit to Kano on Aug. 9, 2016. The commander said that Adamu conspired with a yet-to-be-identified individual in Ilorin to carry out the act.

He said, “Investigation is in process aimed at arresting the accomplice,” adding that the agency was a alerting the public on the fake money in circulation.

“We just want to alert the public to be aware of such fake money because if this amount of money is allowed to be injected into the economy, it is very bad.

“A lay man can hardly identify that they are fake currency. These days we even have cases of people collecting money from ATM and still find fake currency in them,” he added.

The suspect, who spoke to newsmen in Hausa language, admitted that the fake currency was found on him.

Stakeholder in the Kwara State Local Government Pensioners Association have decried the death of pensioners due to unpaid salaries, describing the trend as sad and unacceptable.

The stakeholders who spoke through the Chairman of the association, Mr. lsiaka Akanbi, said no fewer than 1,005 of its members had died since April 2015.


Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, the state capital on Saturday, the chairman urged relevant authorities to urgently effect the payment of pension arrears to senior citizens.

Akanbi said the victims, who cut across the 16 Local Government Councils of the state, died as a result of their inability to get adequate health care attention.

“Among them were the state factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Sunday Fagbemi; a former PDP governorship aspirant in the state, Mr. Sunday Babalola; and the President, Afonja Descendants Union, Mr. Olola Kasum. No fewer than 3,000 of the pensioners were unable to buy drugs for their ailments.

“We have suffered unprecedented discrimination since Ahmed came to power in the state. We are senior citizens and deserve fair treatment. The number of our members who have died is the greatest in comparison with any other sector in the state,” the Chairman said, pleading with the state Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, to come to their aid by ensuring the payment of their pension arrears.

On his part, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said the governor was saddened by the plight of the local government pensioners.


While calling on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to intervene and assist the local governments to pay the arrears in order to curtail the spate of untimely deaths in the state, Akorede blamed the drop in Federation Account allocations for the non-payment of pensions.


He added that the state government was considering strategies to assist them within its available resources.
